How To Create a DIY Sensory Box

Whilst there are options to buy a sensory box online, such as Ali’s Sensory Boxes, it can be just as fun to create your own at home! Knowing the sensory needs and wants of your child also means that you can create an entirely unique sensory box for your child!

Below are some suggestions of sensory items that you could find around your home or buy for a low cost:

Stress balls:

These provide a soft and squidgy texture and are silent objects

Tumble dryer balls:

These are harder and have a spikey texture. Using these balls provides a nice contrast to a stress ball and are small enough to hold.

Silver survival blanket:

With similar qualities to tin foil, survival blankets often last longer and are safer for scrunching and playing. Not only do they provide a scrunching sound, but they also reflect light.

A soft blanket or scarf:

These can be used as a contrasting texture to a survival blanket as they are silent and are much softer.

Ribbon or thin scarf:

These can be used to mimic dynamics* and pitch** in the music and are a great way to initiate an imitative conversation.

Feathers:

These can be used by the young person or the parent/carer to feel the feather’s texture on their skin or by dropping the feather and seeing how slowly it falls to the ground.

Slime:

This can provide a slimy, pliable texture for your child to explore with the music.

You may want to find a container to keep all sensory items together, such as a shoebox or a plastic crate. By keeping all items together, it separates them from other toys and allows for focussed sensory play. It also gives you the option to give your child a couple of sensory items at a time rather than overwhelming them with everything!

All these items can be used alongside the Sensory Sounds music videos to create a multi-sensory experience!

Why not leave a comment on this post about other sensory items you have found around your house!

* Dynamics are how loud and quiet the music is

** Pitch is how high or low the music is
